 Welcome To Hooked on Hessian
Minimize

Hooked on Hessian is an arts program specialising in rug making that operates with the Perth community in Western Australia.

The techniques used by Hooked on Hessian are very different from the methods of rug-making known to most people. A hand machine, called a Rumpelstilskin which looks similar to an eggbeater simplifies the whole process of fixing the thread where the color is wanted. It lets the creative process flow from design to finished product. The end result is a functional mat, wall hanging, cushion cover or whatever your imagination can come up with!

It's fun, creative, safe and hassle free. With no small needles to thread, it is suitable for all from the age of 6 to 116.

The Hooked on Hessian team comprises Nathan and his assistant (mum) Norma. Together they have taken Hooked on Hessian to schools, scout groups, community halls, libraries, seniors homes, festivals, shopping centres and creative workshops.

rumpelstilskin I would like to know how much does one of the rumpelstilskin cost and do we need to buy a frame as well. We are a day centre for seniors and would love to investigate this activity further. please advise. I cannot find a link to your 'workshops' or a link to 'sales' or 'Contact us.' Are these 3 links part of the "work in progress?" regards Jenny. Submitted By: McAuley House

Hello HI Nathan and Norma, I hope you don't think I have dropped off the planet. I love your web site and was very excited to find it. I have been busy putting together a DVD that is just about complete that has all the years of Open Options on it with footage and photos from back as far as Milperra when we first started. It also has you Nathan on your motorised bike doing walkabilities in 2000. As soon as it's finaished I'll dorp a copy into you and catch up for a chat. In the mean time, I hope your both very well and happy. Lots of love, Elizabeth Submitted By: ELizabeth Small

Rugcrafters Australia Guild Hello Norma, My name is Jo Franco, I’m secretary and newsletter editor of the Rugcrafters Australia Guild. The Guild has members in each State and the newsletter contains articles about and information from rugmaking groups around Australia. While various local groups come together to share their interest in this art/craft, the Guild also sponsors workshops and exhibitions. In the March issue there was an article from a NSW rugmaking group about a Rug Aid program they support. As I worked on the article, I remembered some years back stopping into a hall in Maylands where you were also volunteering your time to work with people who were blind. While you used a different type of rugmaking tool, the tactile experience allowed them to also be creative and productive. Wondering if you were still involved with “hooking”, I googled “Hooked on Hessian”, found your website and was pleased to see that you and Nathan are obviously going strong. Rumpelstiltskin tool Hello, I came across your web site by chance. I have started teaching rug making using the Rumpelstilskin tool, along with other types, but have been told by our usual internet supplier that the tool is no longer available. Would you by any chance know what has happened to it? Thanks, Mike Submitted By: Mike Heilman
